Work begins on Perth Arena
Construction of the new Perth Arena has commenced, coinciding with an annoucement from WA Premier Alan Carpenter that the $335 million venue will be built debt free.
Premier Carpenter also announced that when complete, the arena will be managed privately, stating "the ownership obviously remains with the state, but we want the Perth Arena management to be done in the private sector by people who are experienced in entertainment and sports management."
The arena will seat up to 12,000 people for sporting events and 14,000 for concerts, and will have a retractable roof. It is being built in the inner-city suburb of Northbridge site next to the old Entertainment Centre, linking Perth and Northbridge for the first time.
Expected to be completed by 2010, the arena will be the new home of the Hopman Cup tennis tournament.
