Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas welcomes Koala Joey
Wildlife Habitat, a premier wildlife sanctuary in Port Douglas, has announced that Lulu, one of the park’s much-loved resident koalas, is now carrying a joey on her back, delighting guests and keepers alike.
The young joey has recently emerged from the pouch and is beginning to explore the world – a heart-warming sight for anyone visiting the park.
Originally from Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome, Lulu also spent time at Cairns Koalas & Creatures before settling in at Wildlife Habitat in the early 2024. Known for her great personality and curious nature, Lulu has become a guest favourite. However, now she’s taking on her most important role yet as a new mum.
Wildlife Habitat General Manager Clare Anderson says the timing couldn’t be better and enthused “we’re thrilled to share this special moment with our visitors. Watching a joey develop and bond with its mum is one of the most beautiful parts of the koala life cycle - and it’s happening right now at Wildlife Habitat.”
Lulu herself was named after Louise Matthews, Director of Sales at Pullman Reef Hotel Casino, who is a longtime koala-admirer from the Cairns ZOOM days.
Families visiting during the school holidays can see Lulu and her joey and enjoy the park’s wide range of immersive experiences, from feeding kangaroos and wallabies to spotting saltwater crocodiles from the Predator Plank.
For an even closer look, guests can book Breakfast with the Birds, which includes a visit to the koala enclosure, offering a rare opportunity to start the day with a tropical breakfast and spend time up close with these iconic Australian animals.
The award-winning Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas is an immersive exhibit providing visitors with a chance to experience the diverse range of Australian wildlife in Wetlands, Rainforest, Woodland, and Savannah environments up close. It offers immersive experiences that educate, inspire, and foster a deeper connection with nature.
