Western Australia’s New Museum set to open in November 2020

With the construction phase of Western Australia's new museum reaching completion, it has been announced that the museum will open to the public in November 2020.

WA Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman today revealed the completed buildings, showcasing the stunning architecture inspired by the unique landscapes and spirit of Western Australia.

To celebrate the opening, the WA Government will be providing free general admission to all visitors for the first 18 months of operation.

The museum, designed and constructed by Multiplex and its design team Hassell + OMA, has just been shortlisted for the 2020 Australian Construction Achievement awards.

The team has created a state-of-the-art building with exceptional spaces for the new exhibitions and visitor experiences. The contemporary architecture integrates with the heritage-listed buildings, showcasing the history of the site and the various uses of the buildings over time.

When the museum opens in November 2020, it will include eight major galleries; a 1,000metre2 special exhibition gallery; café, food and beverage options; retail and function spaces; and learning studios for people of all ages.

The museum has been developed with a 'people-first approach' with the voices of Western Australians, especially Aboriginal voices, being shared throughout.

80% of materials used on the project were locally supplied, including steel fabrication and concrete with approximately $131 million worth of contracts awarded to WA companies.

The museum is set to be a major cultural tourism attraction for local, national and international visitors with Minister Templeman adding "the New Museum is a magnificent project that showcases Western Australia and its place in the world.

"The design team has created a dramatic building that both complements and contrasts with the beautiful heritage architecture on the site. The result is nothing short of spectacular.

"This is a bold and dynamic architectural statement that will draw locals and visitors to the cultural heart of Western Australia."

WA Finance Minister Ben Wyatt noted "the project has been managed with a focus on customer needs, in this case, providing excellent services and experiences for all museum visitors. The result is a landmark museum for our State, delivered on time and within budget.

"I am proud to see that Aboriginal stories and perspectives will be woven throughout the museum. I look forward to seeing the rich and diverse cultures of Aboriginal Western Australians showcased in our new world-class museum."
