Wellington Phoenix Football Club moves to Wollongong for 2020/21 A-League season
New Zealand-based A-League team the Wellington Phoenix is to call Wollongong home for the duration of the 2020/21 A-League season.
The team have confirmed their move to Wollongong as they continue their preparation for the upcoming national competition. The club will keep its base out of the University of Wollongong and play home games from WIN stadium.
The A-League season is set to begin 27th December and will continue through June 2021. During this time the Phoenix plans to play 13 home games in Wollongong, the first of which will be held Saturday 2nd January against Sydney FC.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery welcomed the announcement that the Wellington Phoenix would call Wollongong home for the duration of their season.
Lord Mayor Bradbery enthused “we are excited to have the Phoenix in Wollongong and offer them a home in Australia. We are eager to have the team become part of the Wollongong community, and likewise, have the region rally around the presence of a professional A-League team.
“We have an enthusiastic sporting community in Wollongong and the Phoenix’s presence is certain to inspire athletes from all codes and spectators alike. We are looking forward to partnering with the team while they are in our city and bringing our community some free skills workshops and opportunities to meet with the players.”
