Warren's wetlands biggest tourist drawcard

A study by the University of Technology Sydney rates the Tiger Bay Wetlands as the most significant visitor attraction for the Warren Shire Council in western NSW.
The Visitor Information Study forms part of the Council's plans to make the town more attractive for tourists, and cites the wetlands as the Shire's biggest drawcard with about 36% cent of tourists visiting the area to sightsee and bird watch.
The Study also lists Warren's recreational vehicle friendly accreditation and the Macquarie Marshes as other key attractions, but identifies the main street as a major weakness because it deters people who are passing through from spending time there.
Mayor Rex Wilson says the Study highlights the importance of the Shire's Streetscape Masterplan, stating "I think we are an attractive town as far as our location on the river and we've got lovely parks and gardens and those sort of things.
"What we have to do is try, in a logical and planned way, improve our main streets to try to make those people who are travelling through want to stop and spend some time in town."
However, the study found many visitors are passing through on their way to the attractions, and don't stop in the town itself.
Mayor Wilson says the Council needs to make the most of its environmental assets, adding "it reinforces what most of us thought anyway but we need to pick up on that and then put in place some logical coherent plans that we'll build on that so we're using scarce resources the best way we can to get the outcome.
"The outcome is to have more people visiting, staying for long and appreciating what we have to offer."
