Walsh Bay Arts Precinct to celebrate Make Music Day with free event program

Sydney’s new cultural precinct, Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, will celebrate Make Music Day on Tuesday 21st June with a series of free concerts and music performances.

Make Music Day is a free worldwide celebration encouraging all those with a passion for music, from emerging musicians to leading companies, to host events and share music with the public. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day is now in its 40th year with celebrations taking place across more than 1000 cities.

This is the fifth year of partnership between Create NSW and Australian Music Association in celebration of Make Music Day and the first Make Music Day program to be presented at Walsh Bay Arts Precinct following the completion of major redevelopment works on Pier 2/3.  

Walsh Bay Arts Precinct will begin celebrations with a lunch-time concert featuring performances by First Nations musicians and bands, Marrumbang and The River Langford Band at Sydney Dance Company’s Mr Jones Café from 12-2pm, supported by EORA College TAFE NSW. Founded on Gadigal lands, Marrumbang perform soulful takes on popular music as well as fresh originals, fronted by Darlene Proberts, a proud Wiradjuri woman with powerful vocals; Lizzie Keys, from the Woremi Nation; James Mcauley from the Gamilliroi nation on the drums and Wiradjuri man Phil Bragg on lead guitar. The River Langford Band has played across several of Sydney’s favourite venues, led by multi-instrumentalist River Langford from the Gumbaynggirr Nation on drums, with Jack North on keys, Charlie Sics on Bass and Dylan Laver on Guitar.

Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will present the inaugural Walsh Bay Arts Precinct PopUp Sing! in the Level 1 Foyer of the recently reopened Pier 2/3 from 5.30pm-6.15pm. The interactive workshop presented by one of Australia’s foremost performing arts companies will be led by Assistant Chorus Master Tim Cunniffe and invites the public to explore their voice and make music with others, through some pop classics.

Australian Theatre for Young People will celebrate the first performance of their reimagining of the sell-out production M.Rock in The Rebel Theatre, with a DJ-set by music producer and artist, Tom Kupers (aka MOTKRS) in the Level 1 Foyer of Pier 2/3 from 8pm-9pm, presented in partnership with Australian Institute of Music.

Visitors to Make Music Day at Walsh Bay Arts Precinct will also be able to purchase a $20 ticket to the preview of M.Rock on the same day.
