Western Australian Environment Minister urges people to 'rediscover parks'

Western Australian Environment Minister John Day has today launched the Rediscover Parks campaign which provides free entry days at selected Western Australian national parks during the summer period.

Minister Day explained that "parks are places where people can connect with the natural environment and gain a real appreciation of the natural beauty of Western Australia.

"By taking advantage of a free day, visitors can discover again the natural wonders that exist in their own areas."

The move follows a Victorian Government initiative that has seen the abolition of entry fees at selected Victorian national and metropolitan parks since 1st July. The move has seen visitor numbers at in Victoria rise by up to 50%.

Beginning this Sunday, 28th November, parks with free entry as part of the Rediscover Parks campaign are:

• Sunday 28th November - Walyunga National Park
• Sunday 19th December - Gloucester, Warren, D'Entrecasteaux and Beedelup national parks
• Sunday 30th January - Porongurup National Park
• Sunday 6th February - Cape Le Grand National Park.

Minister Day said the WA Government was investing almost $25 million this financial year in new and upgraded facilities to ensure the public had a memorable experience when visiting any of WA's regional parks, marine parks and 98 national parks, adding "many of these park improvement projects are funded through the State Government's Royalties for Regions program and will see the construction of roads, campsites and eco-friendly accommodation."
