Victorian Government backs stadium upgrades in Ballarat and Bendigo

The Victorian Government has undertaken to upgrade both Ballarat’s Eureka Stadium precinct and the Bendigo Stadium, to ensure that the regional cities can host the big sporting events.

The Victorian Government has earmarked $31.5 million for the Eureka Stadium in the recent Victorian budget, with $2.5 million already fast-tracked so the project can start sooner.

The $31.5 million it includes $15 million for Eureka Stadium, $9 million for Wendouree Sports and Events Centre, $5 million for the Ballarat Showgrounds upgrade and $2.5 million towards C.E Brown Reserve.

The Victorian Government is also delivering new governance arrangements establishing a Stakeholder Community Advisory Committee to coordinate the master plan for the precinct.

With funds set to flow from 1st July, the City of Ballarat has also appointed two architects – local firm Morton Dunn Architects, and Queensland-based firm Populous – to review the precinct’s master plan.

The plan for Eureka Stadium includes new lighting, spectator seating and a video scoreboard, which will allow the Western Bulldogs to play AFL home-and-away matches in Ballarat, with the potential to deliver increased crowds.

At the Bendigo Stadium new designs by architect Peddle Thorp include retractable seating to increase the Stadium’s capacity to 4,000 along with 12 new outdoor sports.

The Victorian Government’s $5 million investment aims to rejuvenate the ageing indoor venue so it can host national and regional sporting events.
