Victorian fitness operators call for end to gym restrictions
VIC Active has revealed that it is calling on the Victorian Government to address two directives that are restricting gym operations.
Highlighting that with there having been 32 days of “zero COVID-19 cases in Victoria”, VIC Active spokesperson, Tim Schleiger stated last night that remaining restrictions are “making the transition to COVID normal prohibitive and completely redundant on the basis that the virus is eradicated.”
Schleiger cited two directives that are impacting operations, stating “(first) it’s time to ditch the COVID marshals.
“The fact is that fitness centre patrons receive COVID-19 hygiene practices - as do owners, managers and the professionals who work in them. Marshals are a very costly waste of time and serve no purpose.”
Schleiger also called for an end to the maximum of 20 patrons being allowed to return to their fitness centre, adding “(shouldn’t) this number now increase to 100 based on the 1 person per 4 metre² rule.
“These limits apply across the state (so) why don’t the same patron limits apply on public transport or in smaller restaurants or hospitality venues?”
Schleiger went on to say “VIC Active members have acted proactively and responsibly throughout this pandemic. We have been a constructive voice that has worked continuously to give the DHHS (Victorian Department of Health and Human Services) decision makers a real-world view about how fitness centres can manage COVID-19 and play a safe role in getting Victoria moving again.
“There is a proven link between exercise and beneficial physical and mental health outcomes. Fitness centres are important community assets where Victorians can exercise, receive professional instruction and mentoring and get moving.”
Schleiger concluded “VIC Active calls on DHHS to scrap marshals and patron limits. Victoria is COVID free - and so too are fitness centres!”
