Venue Manager Joins RiskSense

Just three months after leaving his position as Director of the NSW State Sports Centre Trust, Peter Ross has resurfaced in a new role as Head of Business Development for Sydney-based risk management company, RiskSense.

Ross, who headed the Trust for more than a decade, says he is excited by the opportunity to get his teeth into something different while staying connected to the industry he knows.

As he states "risk management has become an increasingly important issue for venue managers to understand. In the past many venue managers I know saw it as a necessary evil â something they did reluctantly to comply with OH&S regulations or government or insurance company demands. It was viewed as a time consuming imposition that distracted managers from more important work."

Ross believes that applying a risk management approach to all areas of a business can not only help to avert disasters, but can actually make them more efficient by driving a culture of continuous improvement. He is looking forward to helping venue operators and event organisers integrate risk management techniques into the daily and strategic management of their business.

He adds "while I am a relative newcomer to the risk management game, I have a good understanding of the practical issues faced by venue managers who are often too busy putting out fires to embrace better ways of working."

With his background in venue operational and strategic management, Ross thinks he is well placed to help venues introduce these techniques into areas where they will quickly make a visible difference, such as in the preparation of event risk assessments and risk management plans. Once venue operators and their senior staff experience for themselves the benefits of taking a risk management approach, Ross expects they will be more open to adopting the techniques in other areas of the organisation.

The software developed by RiskSense Pty Ltd makes the task of doing risk assessments quicker, easier and more accurate than conventional approaches using a spreadsheet. For organisations with an existing risk management culture, the software allows executives and managers to consistently and systematically manage the risks right across their business and to benchmark their risk management activities against industry norms.

Now that he is no longer running venues on a full-time basis, Ross is taking the opportunity to balance work with pleasure and tries to take time out of his Bondi office every day for a surf or a swim.
