Universal design to be explored as part of ACAA Conference
A free symposium aimed at explaining the concept of ‘universal design’ in recreation and sport facilities is to be held as part of the annual Association of Consultants in Access Australia (ACAA) Conference.
Being held on the morning of Wednesday 7th October 2015 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the a special one-off event ‘Design for Everyone: A Symposium on Universal Design’ is being brought to the sector by a unique partnership between Sport and Recreation Victoria, the Office of the Victorian Government Architect and Deakin University.
The Symposium will be opened by the Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren and will explore international perspectives on universal design and how the principles are applied in different environments
The event also features a panel session providing delegates with an opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences on universal design.
The speakers at the event include:
• Dr Edward Steinfeld, Distinguished Professor, State University of New York
• Dr Rob Imrie, Professor, Goldsmiths University of London
• Dr Susan Balandin, Inaugural Chair in Disability and Inclusion, School of Health & Social Development, Deakin University
• Michael Walker, Universal Design Facilitator, Sport and Recreation Victoria
The symposium will be facilitated by Jill Garner, acting Victorian Government Architect
This event is being held in conjunction with the ACAA National Conference & Trade Expo – ‘Universal Design: A Better Way’.
Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Michael Walker and Evan Wilkinson will also be address issue relating to facilities and universal design during the ACAA National Conference.
