TIANZ supports new approach to adventure tourism

The Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIANZ) will be at the centre of formulating a new approach to adventure tourism.
TIANZ will work with Outdoors New Zealand (ONZ) to help manage the introduction of a suite of recommendations from the Adventure Tourism Safety Review. The two organisations will jointly help coordinate and work with the adventure and outdoor sector, with the aim of maintaining New Zealandâs international reputation as a world leader in adventure tourism.
Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson today announced details of the new adventure tourism registration scheme. Minister Wilkinson said TIANZ and ONZ would lead the establishment of an industry-led body to strengthen the safety management framework for the adventure tourism sector. This work will include:
·Developing best practice guides
·Collecting better information on the sector
·Investigating whether instructors and guides should hold qualifications and work only within the scope of those qualifications for some commercially delivered activities.
TIANZ Advocacy Manager Geoff Ensor says TIA has supported the review of the adventure and outdoor sector having represented adventure tourism operators throughout the process.
As Ensor explains âthis is definitely about a collective effort that requires the skills and experience of all involved in the sector. We recognise there is always room for improvement and the registration scheme is the next step in the evolution of this important sector of New Zealandâs tourism industry. We look forward to working with operators to implement this step."
