Thredbo closes after ‘epic’ 2015 ski season

With the long weekend having officially ended Australia’s 2015 snow season, Thredbo is looking  back on one of its best winters to date.

Delivering record snowfalls, temperatures and snowmaking, this season gifted the alpine resort with incredible powder days, some wild weather, and one of the biggest and best après ski line-ups in its history.

When over 20cm of snow fell on the first day of winter, the start of the season promised big things and Thredbo responded by opening for skiing and boarding a day earlier than the traditional Saturday of the June Long Weekend.

The weather delivered on its promises, helped along by the Antarctic Vortex, which hit Australian shores in July and made conditions perfect for snow resorts.

During the season, Thredbo welcomed a massive cumulative snowfall of three and a half metres, with over a metre and a half piling up in July alone. The freezing temperatures meant the snowmakers were able to work hard frequently, topping off the white powder when needed.

The great run of low humidity and chilly temperatures, resulted in Thredbo, with Australia’s largest automated snowmaking system, delivering a record season of snowmaking across the resort.

Over the season the snowmakers produced 575,000 metre3 of snow – enough to cover the Sydney Cricket Ground in a metre of snow, 50 times over.

Extending into September, the end of the season provided one of the best springs for riding. Below zero temperatures kept the snow cover in good shape and snowfalls as recent as last week have allowed Thredbo to finish the season with top to bottom riding for the first time since 2012, including running the famous flare run on the last Saturday of the season.

The entertainment and events at Thredbo were equally as impressive.

Throughout the 2015 winter season, the resort featured a stacked line-up of incredible events and entertainment.

The Mumm Race Week saw an Australian first, as European après-ski sensation La Folie Douce flew in from France to perform Poolside at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, making sure the whole crowd was jumping with champagne showers, confetti cannons and incredible talent. Live music in the heart of Thredbo Village also saw some of best Australian music talent perform live and free for guests. The Preatures, The Rubens, Crooked Colours, Seth Sentry, Tigerlily, Gang of Youths, Client Liaison and Alpine all performed on the outdoor stages in the crisp alpine air, filling the resort with showstopping tunes. Australia’s biggest air event, the Toyota One Hit Wonder Big Air competition, hosted home grown legends and the who’s who of the world’s best international invitees, as they threw down huge tricks over a 30 metre monster jump – the largest ever built in Australia.

For the next generation of skiers and snowboarders, the inaugural Torah Bright Mini Shred saw over 200 youngsters ride with Olympic Gold Medallist and Thredbo Ambassador Torah Bright, getting plenty of tips along the way.
