Theatre Network Australia releases statement on Interim Chief Executive

Kate Sulan Chair of the Board of Theatre Network Australia has released a statement on Joshua Lowe’s decision to step down from his role as Interim Chief Executive and choosing not to participate in the recruitment of TNA’s next Chief Executive.

“We thank Josh for his dedicated work, energy, and commitment to the organisation. Joining TNA in 2021, he served as General Manager during a time of significant change, bringing a combination of strategic clarity, creative thinking, and care for the independent and small-to-medium performing arts sector. His leadership on TNA’s digital transformation and operational renewal laid a strong foundation for growth.

“As Co-CEO since early 2024, Josh focused on TNA’s strategic advocacy via relationships with government at state and federal levels and representing the sector through submissions and campaigns. He has been equally effective in maintaining close engagement with our membership across the country.

“Josh’s achievements include significantly expanding TNA’s engagement with the dance sector and co-authoring the Independent Dance Sector Report. He developed key resources such as TNA’s Policy Bank, Advocacy Toolkit, and the 2023 Salary Survey, and led annual reviews of TNA’s Equity Action Plan from 2021-23.

“Josh unified sector advocacy through the 2022 ‘Art and Culture are EVERYWHERE/ESSENTIAL’ election campaign and by convening the Arts Industry Council Victoria. Josh made a lasting impact on the sector for children, young people and the arts, strengthening networks, supporting organisational governance, and amplifying the sector’s voice through TNA’s advocacy and programming.

“The TNA Board is deeply grateful for Josh’s substantial contributions over the last four years. We know the TNA staff will miss his energy, heart, and humour, and join us in wishing him the very best. We have no doubt that Josh will continue to make a significant impact and look forward to seeing where his career leads him next.”

Applications for the role of sole Chief Executive of TNA closed on 28th April and the Board is progressing its selection process with the support of former Chair, Jill Smith. The Board will continue to work closely with and support the TNA staff during this period of transition prior to appointment of the new Chief Executive.
