The Passing of Barry Baillie, Chief Executive NSW Caravan and Camping Industry Association
The Caravan and Camping Industry Association of NSW (CCIA NSW) has acknowledged "great regret and sadness" at the passing of its Chief Executive Barry Baillie.
After contracting pneumonia, Barry passed away on 29th February 2012. CCIA NSW stated "our thoughts and condolences are with Margaret, their children, Brock, Paula, her husband Nick and their two children, Ella and Julian.
"Barry proudly governed the CCIA NSW for ten years whilst contributing to the broader tourism industry as Deputy Chairman of the Tourism Industry Council, a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Western Sydney and a representative on the NSW Tourism Regional Reference Group.
"During his time as Chief Executive at CCIA NSW, Barry launched 'The Outback Discovery Trail', the first Safari of the Australian Caravan Safari Trails Project. In recognition of this achievement, Barry was awarded the Eric Hayman Award at the 2006 Caravan, RV and Accommodation Industry of Australiaï¾s national conference. This prestigious award recognises outstanding contributions to the caravan and camping industry by individuals, companies or groups.
Barry also ensured the caravan and camping industry was a leader in responsible tourism and in his quest to have the industry become part of the environmental solution rather than the problem, he led a study tour to Europe to examine environmental programs in 2002. At the time, there were no programs operating in Australia that included environmental sustainability accreditation for tourism. Upon his return, he commissioned the University of Western Sydneyï¾s assistance in developing the Gumnut Awards, the industryï¾s eco certification program. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Gumnut Awards program continues to grow in membership and recognition and is a legacy he was always proud of.
Barry's achievements began far before his time at CCIA NSW and included working with the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute and AGVIEW's 'Fantastic Family Farm Show', Launching Belgenny Farm 'Birthplace of Australia's Agriculture' as a tourist attraction, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Meat Industry Authority, Chairman of Armcanz Meat Standards Committee and a Director in the NSW Premier's Department.
CCIA NSW President Theo Whitmont explained "Barry worked unstintingly fostering our Association and furthering in countless ways the industry he so loved and was committed to. His loss will be felt for many years to come, not only by his family, close friends and colleagues but those who will get the benefits of his significant industry legacy."
As a testament to his tireless efforts, Barry and his team won the Gold Award for Best Festival and Event in Australia at the Australian Tourism Awards in Cairns last Friday (2nd March). The Award was accepted on Barry's behalf and his contribution to the Supershow's success was acknowledged.
Barry's renowned sense of humour, enthusiasm and drive will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known and worked with him.
His funeral has been held this week and a Tribute Luncheon will be held in his honour on 20th March 2012.
