Thailand welcomes 11 million visitors through first part of 2025
Thailand has experienced a significant tourism surge, welcoming over 11 million international visitors and generating more than 540 billion baht (US$16.1 billion) in revenue during the first few months of 2025.
As reported by the Thailand Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the nation welcomed 11.27 million international tourists between 1st January and 20th April, marking a modest rise of 0.52% growth compared to the same period last year.
China, Malaysia, Russia, India and South Korea emerged as the top five sources of international visitors to Thailand, with China taking the lead at 1.52 million arrivals, closely trailed by Malaysia with 1.4 million. Russia contributed 835,300 arrivals, while India and South Korea followed with 677,800 and 550,000 visitors, respectively.
In the most recent reporting week, from 14th to 20th April, Thailand experienced a temporary slowdown in arrivals. About 534,000 foreign tourists entered the country during this period, representing a decrease of 132,200 people, or roughly 19.85%, compared to the previous week. This dip was anticipated as a typical pattern following the conclusion of major holidays like Songkran and during school vacation periods. Daily average arrivals during this week were approximately 76,300 visitors.
Despite the short-term decline, the outlook for Thailand’s tourism remains highly optimistic. Industry analysts and officials forecast a strong rebound in the coming weeks, driven by a combination of strategic initiatives and favourable conditions.
The expansion of air travel capacity is playing a key role in driving the anticipated recovery.
Thai Airways has added 33 new flights to its summer schedule, enhancing connectivity for international travellers. The designation of 2025 as the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year’ is also expected to boost travel enthusiasm and spark promotional activities across the country.
A series of proactive tourism and sports promotion campaigns, combined with government support measures, are playing a critical role in sustaining Thailand’s appeal as a preferred destination. Initiatives such as visa-free entry for several nationalities, the waiver of TM6 immigration forms to streamline entry processes, and targeted support for airlines to increase the number of inbound flights have all helped to boost travel momentum.
The Thai Government has emphasised its commitment to fostering a tourism-friendly environment, enhancing the overall international image of Thailand, and positioning tourism as a key pillar for sustainable economic growth. In addition to short-term measures, long-term strategies are being developed to ensure that the tourism sector continues to contribute significantly to Thailand’s broader economic development.
