Tennis Australia proposes to upgrade and manage Dendy Park Tennis Centre
In partnership with the Dendy Park Tennis Club and Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club, Tennis Australia is proposing to upgrade and manage the tennis centre in Dendy Park through a 21-year lease with Bayside City Council
The lease includes Dendy Park Tennis Club remaining as resident club, increased community access, and substantial investment towards improving the tennis facilities.
Dendy Park Tennis Centre is a 19 en-tout-cas court venue (type of clay court with the term derived from the French expression meaning 'in any case'- a subtle nod to being able to play on this surface in most weather conditions) which requires significant upgrades to meet community needs, encourage participation in racket sports for all ages, and develop the next generation of Bayside tennis stars.
The Tennis Australia proposal aims to improve the tennis facilities by upgrading the clay courts, converting five existing courts to hard (acrylic) courts, installing new modified game courts (Padel, pickleball, POP tennis or touch tennis), and refurbishing and extending the existing pavilion.
The upgrade plan is fully funded by the Tennis Australia partnership and would commence with a $2.5 million investment for the first stage of the upgrade. The upgrade would be delivered over three stages, subject to additional funding support.
The proposed lease also includes greater community (non-member) access to courts and discounts on membership and bookings for Bayside residents. Council would receive $1.2 million in rent over the lease term, as well as a percentage of membership fees.
Bayside City Council is asking the community for feedback on whether they should grant a 21-year lease to Tennis Australia to develop and manage the Dendy Park Tennis Centre.
Consultation is open until 18th October 2022.
