Temporary local government recreation and leisure staffing specialists

Emerging business Rec Relief is changing the way Victorian Councils are engaging staff in the aquatic and recreation sector.

Rec Relief's Mandy Nolton explains that a range of reasons lead to Councils struggling with staffing loads: planned and unplanned leave, recruiting difficulties, unexpected community or council demands, and even surprise funding can all put pressure on permanent teams, impacting on the team's ability to work efficiently.

Rec Relief offers affordable and flexible staffing solutions with their permanent team of experienced and qualified recreation and leisure professionals. The Rec Relief team specialises in short term placements in aquatic and recreaion facility management and contract management, recreation development, recreation liaison, and recreation planning.

Nolton states "Rec Relief staff are all industry professionals who work across a number of different Councils in any given week.

"Rec Relief staff fit seamlessly into any team, don't require training (and) bring with them industry experience and knowledge, having worked in a variety of locations and municipalities."

Rec Relief staff develop long lasting relationships with the teams and communities they work with and often return time and time again to the same clients. The ability to call on an industry professional at such short notice is a real advantage to the industry.

The relationship works for both parties in that the Councils can engage an experienced and qualified member to join their team on a casual basis, sometimes for only a few days a week for a period of time and Rec Relief staff enjoy the flexibility and variety of working in this way.

Nolton adds "when clients don't need us anymore, they don't have to make us redundant or terminate us. We don't get offended, we just hope our clients call us again when they need some additional support".

Based in Victoria, Rec Relief has been providing services to rural and metropolitan Councils in Victoria since its inception four years ago. During that time, the team has grown from one staff member to seven in that period, showing that the industry is really getting behind the concept and supporting it.

Norton hopes to expand the service into other states and is excited about further developing Rec Relief to offer greater flexibility for Councils to build the best team possible within their budgets. She believes that the concept of engaging temporary staff to compliment a permanent team will increase in popularity as a way to get the best value for money in an unpredictable environment.
