Sydney’s Inner west Council commences major renovation of Leichhardt Pool
The first stage of works on the major Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre renovation is underway with Sydney’s Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne noting "this is the biggest renovation undertaken of an Inner West aquatic centre and will secure its future for another 50 years.”
Stage 1 works will focus on improving the children's play and indoor pool usage and will include:
A new children’s splash and play area
Refurbishment of the children's play pool
BBQ area, seating, and shade structures
New and advanced heating and cooling systems for the indoor program pool and the surrounding indoor pool area, as well as the children's pool
Inner West Council successfully secured $1 million in funding from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts to be used toward stage 1 upgrades.
Additionally, Council has also secured $1,054,000 in funding from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) for the installation of advanced heating and cooling systems.
This will significantly improve the centre's sustainability and energy performance by disconnecting from gas boilers and reducing the overall carbon footprint.
Mayor Byrne said many thousands of local families depend on the aquatic centre for their exercise, rehabilitation, and wellbeing and added "although such a large-scale project is challenging and requires substantial investment to deliver, we see upgrading and improving our public pools as being crucial to the health and wellbeing of our community."
This renovation will be carried out in two separate stages to help minimise as much disruption to users as possible.
Stage 2 upgrades will be more substantial with works commencing in early 2026. This will see the delivery of a new heated 50 metre Olympic pool and multiuse 25 metre pool that can be used for water polo, learn to swim programs, aqua aerobics, and other activities.
