Sydney Royal Easter Show is good to go
NSW Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts has announced the results of Sydney Royal Easter Show safety checks by Fair Trading inspectors.
Minister Roberts assured Show patrons that showbags and gas and electrical appliances had undergone a rigorous inspection process and said inspectors would continue checks on toys and electrical and gas appliances up until the Show finishes on 18th April. Minister Roberts stated "Fair Trading inspected 342 showbags in early March, checking toys and other novelty items to ensure they met product safety standards (and) I can assure the public that as far as Fair Trading is concerned, the Easter Show is good to go.
"Fair Trading's activities resulted in two exhibitors being directed to remove toys. One was a plush children's toy, for which a test report was not provided.
"The other toy, a bow and arrow set, did not comply with the relevant product safety standard. A force test revealed that it was 100 times over the allowable limit under the standard."
Minister Roberts said Fair Trading had also checked products at lead up shows in Castle Hill, Newcastle and Camden in March, with no unsafe products detected, adding "this week Fair Trading gas safety inspectors are also checking more than 100 mobile food vendor vans across the showgrounds.
Inspectors check LPG gas installations on each van to ensure compliance with gas safety regulations and Australian standards and ensure that any problems are rectified before the show starts.
"So far several problems have been identified and rectified. One installation had a hot water heater enclosed in a cabinet with insufficient ventilation, large LPG bottles stored close to an ignition source (a hot water heater), unsecured bottles and a small pump stored beside LPG bottles. Another had LPG bottles stored too close to an ignition source, while a third had a regulator not secured or mounted therefore allowing the possibility of a leak to occur."
