Sydney Park Ranger Attacked

A City of Sydney Ranger has undergone surgery at a Sydney hospital after being attacked on the job.

Mahmud Swalah-McDahrou was admitted to St Vincent's Hospital with a broken leg, a broken bone in one hand, and a deep cut to his face on Thursday after he was assaulted in the inner-Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst.

Following the attack, a statement from the City of Sydney read "the attack is deeply distressing and concerning, as rangers are working men and women who are just trying to do their job.

"We will ensure the ranger's wellbeing with the best medical treatment and access to counselling services if required.

"The City would like to thank other rangers and emergency services who were on the scene within minutes and many members of the public who also rushed to help.

"City of Sydney rangers are trained by external and nationally accredited trainers and taught to diffuse potentially troublesome situations. This usually involves adopting the 'walk away' policy, which is successful in most cases.

"The City of Sydney is working closely with police and will conduct its investigation into the attack."

A 29-year-old man faced court on Friday following the assault.

Nektarias Houllis was in Sydney's Central Local Court charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.

Houllis did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
