Sydney Eastern Suburbs aquatic centre to get $8.3 million upgrade

Randwick Council is to develop an $8.3 million fitness facility as an addition to its Des Renford Aquatic Centre.
With the Sydney Eastern Suburbs Council having voted unanimously in favour of the development, Randwick residents are now being invited to attend drop-in sessions to speak with council staff to get an insight into the complex. Residents are also being invited to say what they want from a modern fitness centre and the types of fitness activities and programs it should host.
Randwick Mayor Murray Matson said the new fitness facility would bring the centre, which was opened in 1963, up to modern standards while complementing and enhancing the existing swimming pools, lawns and BBQ areas.
Mayor Matson explained "he concept plan proposes a purpose built cr agrche, providing a safe place for mums, dads and carers to leave their kids while working out in the pool, gym or while taking part in an exercise class."
The new building will be designed with a low carbon footprint and includes passive solar design, natural lighting and energy efficient fixtures and fittings, natural ventilation, and rainwater harvesting and recycling.
The cost of the project will be met through the 'Buildings for our Community' fund and income from gym fees while Randwick Council has undertaken that there will be no ongoing cost to ratepayers or increase in pool fees as a result of the upgrade.
Mayor Matson said the council wants residents to have their say on what they need from a modern fitness centre, the types of fitness activities and programs to be held and what hours the cr agrche should open.
Features of the upgrade include:
ï¾ An upgraded cafe and kitchen
ï¾ New reception, foyer and offices
ï¾ Landscaping and demolition of the existing substandard administration building
ï¾ Two levels to reduce the building footprint and maximise floor space a building shape and orientation that maximises privacy for neighbours an atrium allowing natural light through the centre of the building a new entrance from the car park, with no loss of parking spaces.
Drop-in sessions will be held at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre, Maroubra, NSW on Tuesday 30th August and Tuesday 13th September.
