Sri Lanka's Commonwealth Games Bid grows in confidence

With just 40 days until the vote to decide who will host the Commonwealth Games in 2018, Sri Lanka's inaugural Hambantota 2018 bid has been gathering momentum.
Key milestones achieved in recent months have seen Hambantota 2018 firmly acknowledged as a serious contender according to bid watching commentators.
Hambantota 2018 Organising Committee Co-Chairman and Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, explains "there is an extraordinary enthusiasm (in Sri Lanka) for the games. This is an amazing opportunity to showcase our unified nation and develop a new momentum, not only for sport but for the economy and our people. There are enormous opportunities for young people to train, for businesses to grow, for venues to be constructed and for legacies to be delivered. The Games should aspire to deliver these."
If successful, the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium will be the centerpiece of the 2018 Games, hosting the ceremonies and archery competition.
Built for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the stadium has a capacity of 34,300 people which will be expanded to 60,000 seats to host the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 and if Hambantota's bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games are successful.
The Hambantota bid is based on having most event venues clustered in a single sporting precinct.
