Sport Otago Chief Executive brings expertise to NZRA board
John Brimble, one of New Zealand’s most experienced sport, recreation and wellness administrators has been appointed to the Board of the New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA).
Brimble, who works as Chief Executive of Sport Otago, will join NZRA’s seven-member board in May.
NZRA Board Chair Kiri Pope said Brimble’s appointment was well timed, with NZRA expanding its services to those involved in the broader outdoor recreation sector, in addition to its existing environments – parks and open spaces, aquatics and community recreation.
Pope explained “John brings vast management and governance experience to NZRA’s Board.
“His experience in local government, education and health will be invaluable, especially given the government’s statements on strengthening links between recreation and health.”
Brimble has had a long involvement in sport as a competitor, administrator, and in governance roles. This has included roles on working parties in the local government sector, director of foreign students at a Dunedin high school, group manager operations and services for a major local authority, and localities manager for a medical practioners’ association, where he was involved in the establishment of the seven primary health organisations across the South Island.
Brimble currently serves on the Boards of The New Zealand Masters Games Company, Sportnet NZ – the umbrella organisation representing the 17 Sports Trust across New Zealand – and Southern Zone New Zealand Rugby League.
His previous governance roles include service on the boards of Water Safety New Zealand, Presbyterian Support Otago, the Otago Museum Trust, Otago Early Settlers, Basketball Otago, New Zealand Universities Rugby League, and Sport Otago.
