Sport Business NZ 2012 to focus on challenges facing sporting organisations

The upcoming Sport Business NZ 2012 conference in Auckland will focus on the challenges facing sporting organisations in a tough economic climate.

The conference will also address governance and leadership issues in the Australian and New Zealand sports industry.

Event organiser Shand Worthington explains "whe umbrella theme of the conference is achieving financial stability within clubs and organisations

"There have been quite a few clubs that have struggled with tough times, almost falling over. What I found is that's a common challenge and issue across the codes. You could ask the questions across cricket, football or rugby or whatever sport and I think it's an issue that's the top of the tree as far as the main core challenges facing them."

Worthington adds that the conference will tackle the 'hard' issues and provide "practical solutions for improving the financial sustainability of ... sporting organisations around New Zealand."

Worthington believes the example of the SKYCITY NZ Breakers, winners of the National Basketball League title last season, will be one all conference delegates will be able to learn from.
Breakers General Manager Richard Clarke will be addressing the conference, and Worthington explains "the club is a fantastic example of achieving success in tough economic times.

"Being a small sporting code in New Zealand and then winning the championship and filling out our biggest indoor stadium they're an amazing story of a small sporting code basically taking it on."

Sport Business NZ 2012 is being held at the Hilton Auckland Hotel on 25th to 27th September.
