Singapore Sports Hub set for June completion
The Singapore Sports Hub will open completely as of mid-June, with all its facilities, including the new National Stadium, open to the public.
While originally scheduled to open in April, the Singapore Sports Council and Sports Hub Pte Ltd (SHPL) have announced the delayed completion while also revealing that the precinct will begin hosting events as of April, when the venue will be 95% complete.
24 world-class sports and entertainment events are currently scheduled to take place at the Singapore Sports Hub this year with the Singapore Sports Festival introducing the Singapore Sports Hub to the public when the facility fully opens in June.
While rugby will be the first sport played at the new National Stadium, the Singapore Open 2014 badminton tournament will be staged at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in April, with 12 other sporting events to be held during the year.
In addition, 11 performances by artistes Taylor Swift and Jay Chou as well as the Singapore Chinese Orchestra are also scheduled for the venue.
Commenting on the schedule, Singapore Sports Council (SSC) Chief Executive Lim Teck Yin stated "the venue is going to be very (heavily) booked, more so than many other venues around the world."
Lim said some of the challenges they faced include maintaining the turf conditions and the readiness of the stadium as there is not a lot of time for recovery.
Looking forward to the Singapore Sports Festival, Singapore's acting Culture, Community and Youth Minister Lawrence Wong said on his Facebook page that this will be for Singaporeans to "experience the full suite of amenities and activities at the Sports Hub".
It will be headlined by world-class floorball, swimming and rugby.
The inaugural World Club Rugby 10s will be the first event to kick off at the new National Stadium a hybrid version of rugby that marries the speed of the 7s with the intensity of the 15s.
The Singapore Rugby Union is aiming to host a series of world class rugby at the new Stadium, including events to commemorate Singapore's 50th year of independence.
As opening approaches, SHPL will be phasing the opening of the venue in order to test its systems thoroughly. It then plans to ramp up operations at a controlled pace, given the scale and complexity of the project.
SHPL said safety and quality of experience at the Sports Hub are paramount and these will not be compromised.
The Sports Hub will have a soft opening in mid-April, when the Singapore Sports Museum, Sports Hub Library, OCBC Aquatic Centre and the Water Sports Centre will open.
