Singapore Science Centre looks for digital planetarium sponsor

The Singapore Science Centre is seeking a sponsor to back the upgrade of its planetarium.
The installation of a digital planetarium system is seen as vital for the 23-year-old complex, which used to screen planetarium shows using a mechanical projector in its Omni-Theatre. It ceased operations more than a decade ago due to a technical breakdown.
The centre is seeking about S$4.5 million to install hardware, software, and purchase film titles.
Associate Professor Lim Tit Meng, Chief Executive of the Singapore Science Centre, explains "like a DJ, we can actually formulate how we want to bring an audience. For example, from Earth, travelling all the way to the Sun and going beyond the solar system, riding all the way to the edge of the universe...this whole experience is going to be so transforming in terms of our understanding of how small and unique we are in the vastness (of space)."
The Omni-Theatre attracted nearly 300,000 visitors last year with numbers expected to double if it is successful in funding the new attraction.
The Hong Kong Space Museum already operates the new technology, which has helped increase visitor numbers have increased by 30 to 40%.
Chan Ki-Hung, curator of the Hong Kong Space Museum,is impressed by the technology stating that the technology "can do many things. (It is) not just limited to astronomy. It can teach other science subjects such as biology, architecture."
