Sell Out for Game two of NBL Grand Final Series
The 'Orange Army' has come out in droves to support their National Basketball League team's bid to win its first-ever NBL championship, with Game Two of the Cairns Taipans' 2011 iiNet NBL Grand Final series against the New Zealand Breakers selling out in record time.
Tickets for the match, which is scheduled for 4pm time this Sunday (24th April) at the Cairns Convention Centre, only went on sale yesterday morning to the general public at 9am.
Any concerns that the game being played on Easter Sunday might negatively impact the crowd were soon dispelled, as every single ticket for the game was eagerly snapped up by the Taipans ï¾Orange Army' before midday.
The Taipans might be heading into the series with New Zealand as the underdogs, but they have already beaten the Breakers in one key area. New Zealand sold-out their venue for Game One in just under 10 hours, but it took Cairns fans just two hours and 10 minutes to make Game Two a sell-out.
Team officials have confirmed that is the fastest that the Taipans have ever sold out the Cairns Convention Centre in club history.
The rush on tickets follows a sell-out of Cairns' earlier Semi-Final home game against archrivals the Townsville Crocodiles, as well as a massive 33% increase in their regular season attendance over last season which was the largest growth in the NBL for 2010/11.
The massive local support evident in Cairns is a positive reflection on the increased efforts the club has made to reconnect with the grassroots since moving to a successful community ownership model prior to the 2009/10 season.
The local Cairns council is also currently showing their support for the Taipans by offering free parking in the Cairns CBD to those that decorate their cars in team colours and running a competition for businesses that dress up their staff and workplaces to support the team.
Game One of the best-of-three iiNet NBL Grand Final series between Cairns and New Zealand tips-off tonight at 6:30pm at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland. It will be seen live in Australia on TV on ONE HD and in New Zealand on SKY Sport 3.
