Seek jobs website shows rise in demand for hospitality and tourism staff

Jobs in hospitality and tourism are one of three Australian industry sectors to have recorded the strongest growth in demand over the past year, according to figures released by online employment marketplace SEEK.

The figures in the SEEK employment report show particular demand for chefs and cooks, waiters, bar and beverage staff, kitchen and sandwich hands, front office and guest services - along with management. Travel agency personnel are not mentioned.

SEEK show the top three industries recording a growth of job advertisements over the past year as being:

• Trades and Services (+40.9%)
• Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics (+31%)
• Hospitality and Tourism (+30.5%)

The SEEK employment report advises “all three of these industries are showing extremely strong growth comparing January 2020 to January 2021.”

Overall, SEEK job advertisements were up 6.5% year-on-year with the Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria being the top three states that contributed the most to year on year job ad growth while Tasmania had a small drop of 0.7%

SEEK ANZ Managing Director, Kendra Banks commented “in a very encouraging start to the year, we are continuing to see positive job ad growth nationally.

“Traditionally, we would see a drop in new job ad growth throughout December, and into the start of January. Pleasingly, in 2021, businesses have been looking to hire from the very first week of the year.

“New job ads posted on SEEK grew 4% month-on-month and looking at the year-on-year comparison, we have now seen December 2020 and January 2021 increase by 5% and 6.5% respectively. This is the third consecutive month of year-on-year increases.”
