Sea World Whale Watch Spots Season's First Whales
With the Gold Coast whale watching season fast approaching, Sea World Whale Watch has spotted two large Humpbacks four nautical miles off the Gold Coast Seaway.
During a standard pre-season training session the Sea World Whale Watch team were excited to report spotting and photographing the first whales of the season. Two large mammals surfaced within metres of the Sea World Whale Watch vessel on Friday morning.
One of the mammals was observed to have a black underbelly and fluke (tail) - which is very rare, as this area on a Humpback is usually white.
With this level of activity sighted in May, guests can rest assured that the approaching Sea World Whale Watch season will be the ultimate whale watching experience on the Gold Coast in 2010.
Sea World's custom designed $3.4 million catamaran will comfortably carry in excess of 100 passengers and will operate daily (weather permitting) from the Sea World Whale Watch Terminal.
The whale watching season runs from 29th May to November during the annual Humpback Whale migration and sees between 8,000 and 10,000 whales travel past the Gold Coast. The whales migrate along the east coast of Australia on their annual journey to the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef to calf and mate. These magnificent mammals then begin the long journey home to feed on the krill rich Antarctic waters.
