SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast collaborates on community beach clean-ups

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium and the SEA LIFE Trust in collaboration with Swim Fit and Zenko Yoga are organising two community clean-ups on the Sunshine Coast this winter.

The SEA LIFE Trust is a global marine conservation charity and clean-ups will be taking place in conjunction with SEA LIFE Aquariums around the world throughout July.

Sunshine Coast locals are encouraged to lend a hand to help make a positive impact on the environment by removing waste that can be harmful to marine life.

“We are excited to bring the local community together to help enact positive change by limiting the amount of harmful litter that ends up in the ocean. We are uniting with Swim Fit, Zenko Yoga, and the wider community to help make a real difference this winter,” said Chloe Zatta, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarist and SEA LIFE Trust Representative.

On Sunday 20th June, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is joining forces with Swim Fit to help make Cotton Tree cleaner and greener. Volunteers are asked to meet beside the Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre from 7am to clear litter from Cotton Tree Beach and learn all about marine conservation from the SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast team.

On Sunday 11th July, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast will host a Mooloolaba Beach clean as part of the SEA LIFE Trust Global Beach Clean. Volunteers are asked to meet at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast at 7am and participants are invited to take part in a free beach yoga session with Zenko Yoga.

Participants at both clean up events are asked to BYO gloves.

Not only is the litter washing up on local shores an unpleasant sight; it also harms and kills marine wildlife. According to Ocean Crusaders, it is believed there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in our oceans causing over 100,000 marine mammals to die globally each year. Turtles, whales, dolphins, sea lions and sea birds are particularly susceptible to plastic pollution.
