Scott Carter step down from NZRL Chairmanship

New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) Chairman Scott Carter is stepping down from his leadership roles with the game’s domestic and international bodies.

With the NZRL in disarray five years ago, Sport NZ appointed Carter as an independent chairman to help oversee reform and during his term at the helm, the national body has reclaimed credibility in the sporting community.

Carter also chaired the Rugby League International Federation through the build-up to last year’s World Cup, helping New Zealand secure a permanent seat on the council and co-hosting rights for the 2017 RLWC.

However, his day job as Chief Executive of Matrix Security Group has also seen a significant increase in business over recent months, after the acquisition of another company late last year.

Explaining his decision, Carter stated “if there is a perfect time for me to step down from the chair, this is it.

“We’ve come a long way over the past few years, which is a credit to the NZRL board and staff, particularly the three chief executives during that time – Murray McCaw, Jim Doyle and Phil Holden.

“After a year in the job, Phil now has the reins firmly in hand and has set our course for the new strategic cycle. It’s time for me to pass the baton on to my successor.”

Holden unveiled his new 2014/17 ‘Playbook’ strategic plan to NZRL staff this week and will now begin presenting that vision to stakeholders around the country.

Carter will surrender his chair at the annual general meeting in June, with his replacement likely to be appointed at the next board gathering.
