School-leaver looks to long term learn-to-swim career

Just a few months into her new career as a Learn-to-Swim Instructor, recent school-leaver Raven Lee says working for Aqua Learn to Swim, Blacktown City Council’s own learn to swim program, is something that she can see herself doing long term.

Having being introduced to the water from a very young age, Lee (pictured) was offered the opportunity to complete the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course through a partnership between Aqua Learn to Swim, AUSTSWIM and Wyndham College.

She explains “we were given lots of information about the course, the opportunities available for work with Council’s learn to swim program and also told that there was potential to build on our knowledge and skills with extension courses.

“As a kid I would swim at Blacktown Aquatic Centre and see the Learn to Swim program taking place. The kids would have so much fun learning new swimming techniques each time.

“When the opportunity was presented to me I knew that this was the career path that I wanted to pursue and I haven’t looked back since.

“Being a Learn to Swim Instructor is more than a job - it’s an extremely rewarding opportunity to teach children an important life skill.

“I love turning up for lessons each week and seeing each child’s progression in the program, whether it be a new found confidence in the water or a new swimming technique that they’ve mastered.”

Lee currently teaches school age children but is looking to undertake other AUSTSWIM courses which will qualify her to teach infants and adults.

To further encourage students to become Learn to Swim Instructors, Aqua Learn to Swim is looking to partner with other high schools in the Blacktown Local Government Area in the future.

Aqua Learn to Swim’s next AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course will take place at Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope on 29th July 2017.
