Sapphire Aquatic Centre confident of funding solution

The Sapphire Aquatic Centre at Pambula on the New South Wales far south coast is apparently confident that it can find a solution for a $50,000 budgeted shortfall.

Opened in October 2010 as a community venture developed by Pambula Aquatic Centre Inc, the facility has been seen as a fine example of how a community facility can be developed using local donations and contributions from local contractors.

The development was also aided by a significant grant from the Federal Government and support from the Bega Valley Shire Council.

Now operated by Sapphire Aquatic Limited, a not-for-profit local community company, the Council has rejected a request to fund the budget shortfall.

Aquatic Centre Chairman Colin Dunn says it has already moved to remedy building and pool defects along with reorganising its cash flow to meet operating commitments, telling the ABC "we are very aware that this is a community facility providing an enormous valuable service.

"We are also very aware or our responsibility with regards to supervision of swimmers in the pool to make sure we have adequate lifeguards around the facility but there are some costs which we cannot move away from?"
