RiverConnect Strategic Plan launched for Goulburn and Broken Rivers

Improved access to the Goulburn and Broken rivers and a stronger focus on Aboriginal cultural activities are two of the key focus areas of the RiverConnect Strategic Plan launched this week by the Greater Shepparton City Council and Goulburn Broken Management Catchment Authority.

The Strategic Plan is RiverConnect’s vision to connect people with the local rivers and wetlands providing a strategic priority and program to achieve this.

Other focus areas identified in the plan are:

• Increased community engagement incorporating the river environment
• Tackling rubbish dumping along the Goulburn and Broken Rivers
• Increased student and school engagement with the river environment

Introducing the Plan, Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said “all the partners of RiverConnect have worked tirelessly to write the RiverConnect Strategic Plan, after asking for the community feedback in early 2017, the plan has now been developed with the list key priorities”.

“I would like to thank everyone who has contributed and worked hard on this strategic plan. Now RiverConnect can focus on key areas within Greater Shepparton. The strategic plan not only helps the community over the long term, but also assists our rivers and wetlands to be enjoyed for generations to come.

“The plan will also assist RiverConnect to apply for funding grants by State and Federal Governments as a long term project we need ongoing support.”

Goulburn Broken CMA Chief Executive Chris Norman added “the priorities in the strategic plan complement the work that is being done with community, local government, Traditional Owners and other agencies to plan and deliver activities such as environmental flows, revegetation and native fish stocking.

“These activities improve the health of the Goulburn and Broken rivers and in turn the environmental, social and economic prosperity of the region.”

RiverConnect is a community project in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Department of Education and Training, Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative, Word and Mouth, Goulburn Murray Landcare Network and Goulburn Valley Environment Group.
