Revamped Caneland Park lures Mackay families
Another link in Mackay's Bluewater Trail has been completed with a $2.6 million revamp of Caneland Park along the Pioneer River.
Mackay Region Mayor Col Meng said the public open space and river walkway complemented the existing lifestyle facilities in the area, stating "the playground, BBQ facilities and picnic shelters value-add to the Bluewater Lagoon and make it a family-friendly environment."
The work is part of council's Bluewater Activation Strategy which delivers a range of activities and projects along the riverfront and facilitates residential and commercial opportunities within the City Centre.
Mayor Meng ccontinued "I am sure families will make good use of the area."
Parks and Natural Environment portfolio councillor Ross Walker said the revamped area would become a major public open space, adding "we have opened up access to the river and provided a much better pedestrian link along the river front and ultimately to the front entrance of Caneland Central and the Pioneer Environmental Walk."
Councillor Walker said the inclusion of fitness equipment added another dimension to the open space.
Funding for the development was generated through a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mackay Regional Council.
Mayor Meng said it's another example of the public sector working collaboratively with the private sector to achieve a positive outcome for the community, concluding "once the redevelopment of Caneland Central is complete, this area will become an iconic part of Mackay."
Councillor Meng commended the work of Dig-It Landscapes who faced ongoing challenges with the weather to complete the project.
