Resources to manage drowning risks at public pools

Following an investigation into the death of a child in 2007 at a public swimming pool where a large inflatable pool device was installed, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has been undertaking a number of initiatives to improve public swimming pool safety.

One initiative has been to publish an information guide, 'Managing drowning risks at publicly accessible pools' which can be viewed at the WHSQ website (see link below).

The resource focuses on Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA) guidelines, developed in consultation with the aquatics industry across Australia, to provide advice to the industry on the minimum requirements to prevent or minimise the risk of drowning in publicly accessible pools.

The guidelines cover Safe Pool Operations; Water Safety in Body Corporate Pools; Hotel, Motel, Camping and Caravan Grounds; Commercial Learn to Swim and School Pools; and in Urban Water Developments.
