Remote Northern Territory communities receive major recreational upgrades
The Northern Territory Government is continuing to support remote communities through a more than $1.5 million investment into facility upgrades of the Lajamanu and Yuendumu Ovals.
Member for Stuart Bess Price said the sports ground upgrades are much needed and will provide a significant improvement to the recreational facilities in these communities.
She explained “the Territory Government is working hard to deliver for the bush and encourage Territorians to live healthy and active lives.
“It is wonderful to see the Yuendumu Oval upgrades near completion, and I look forward to joining the community tonight to celebrate their local Sports Carnival while utilising some of the new upgraded facilities.
“Some of the new facilities include the installation of grandstands and bench seats, a new scoreboard, refurbishment of existing and new change rooms, an upgraded football oval boundary fence, and the connection of water and sewage services.
“The installation of permanent lighting, goal posts and shade facilities will be delivered in the coming weeks.
“As part of the major upgrades, the Yuendumu softball field will be re-shaped with a homerun fence and backstop net installed along with new shade shelters. Most of these new facilities have been completed and others are due for completion in the coming weeks.”
Temporary lighting has been funded by the Territory Government for the Yuendumu Sports Carnival over the weekend.
The Central Desert Regional Council have been contracted to undertake the works. Works continue to be undertaken by Alice Springs subcontractors, the Council’s civil works team and participants in the local Remote Jobs and Communities Program.
The Lajamanu oval upgrades are due to commence in the coming months, with the majority of works intended to be completed before the wet season.
