Regional Destination Management Plans released for Northern Territory

Regional Destination Management Plans for major regional Northern Territory tourism areas of Big Rivers, Barkly, Alice Springs, MacDonnell Ranges and Lasseters have been released, setting out specific advantages for each region and providing a roadmap for future tourism development and investment.

The Plans are a key action of the Northern Territory’s Tourism Industry Strategy 2030 and have been developed through extensive stakeholder consultation.

Each region’s identified actions will be overseen by a project implementation team that includes representatives from Tourism NT, Regional Tourism Organisations, Land Councils, and Regional Councils as well as NT Government departments.

The Plans identify the strengths and assets of each of the regions, including tourism products, visitor trends and expectations, as well as social and economic factors to enable a holistic approach to tourism growth.

Each plan has a number of actions in order to activate opportunities and address any gaps with a focus on prioritising product development while encouraging sustainability.

Major comparative advantages include the importance of drive touring, both as part of cross-country tourism, and intra-Territory tourism, authentic Aboriginal cultural attractions and experiences including Aboriginal cultural festivals.

A further two Destination Management Plans for East Arnhem Land and Greater Darwin will be developed and released in 2021.

Northern Territory Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Natasha Fyles notes “as the tourism industry continues to navigate its way through the impacts of COVID-19, the Destination Management Plans underpin a holistic approach to tourism in the NT over the next decade.

“The Plans focus on the growth, future development and investment and enable a coordinated approach to tourism between business, government, the tourism industry and communities.”
