Redeveloped Elizabeth Aquadome 'exceeds expectations'

In less than a month since its formal reopening, the Aquadome in the South Australian suburb of Elizabeth has, according to City of Playford Mayor, Martin Lindsell "been welcomed by the community and exceeded our expectations for usage."

Reopened on the 18th July after a 12 month redevelopment, the City of Playford's facility has undergone a complete $15.8 million refurbishment of its existing 50 metre pool and welcomed the addition of an exciting new 110 metre waterslide, a new 25 metre leisure pool with beach entry, a new modern gym and fitness facilities, steam room, spa facilities and crèche facilities with indoor and outdoor areas.

John Hindmarsh (SA) Pty Ltd undertook the construction works which also included new change rooms and toilet facilities, modern cafe and administration areas, a large entrance plaza fronting Elizabeth's Crockerton Road, a floodlit 100 vehicle car park, new outdoor landscaped areas and a skatebowl facility.

Its popularity in the local community has, according to Centre Manager Ray Smith, seen "fitness memberships rise from 900 to 2,200 members and the learn-to-swim program expand from 600 to 900 swimmers."

Designed, in association, by Hames Sharley & Suters Prior Cheney Architects, the state of the art facility features many âgreenâ initiatives. These include, 150 metre2 of solar panels which generate a massive 15kw of power, the use of aquifer storage recovery (ASR) water for toilet flushing and landscaping and a building management system (BMS) which provides efficient lighting and temperature control.

The Aquadome is owned by the City of Playford and is run by the YMCA.
