Recipients announced for Tasmania’s Women in Sport Coaching Scholarship

The Tasmanian Government’s Women in Sport Coaching Scholarship has been awarded to two female Tasmanian coaches, Jessica Blake (hockey) and Abbey Savage (swimming) contributing towards developing their skills and gaining national experience.

Following the inaugural launch of the scholarship last year, each of the coaches will receive $5,000 as part of the partnership between Womensport and Recreation Tasmania Inc and the Tasmanian Institute of Sport.

The aim is to provide quality coaching opportunities to women and increase the number and expertise of female coaches in Tasmania.

It involves mentoring and allows the scholarship holders to gain valuable national experience while expanding their own knowledge and skills.

This includes the utilisation of sports psychology, integration and utilisations of current technology practices within their programming and daily training environment, exposure to national camps and involvement with high performance teams.

Womensport and Recreation Tasmania President Dana Faletic is pleased to continue the partnership with the Tasmanian Institute of Sport to offer support to female coaches.

Faletic advised "in coaching, as in many other areas, women face barriers to participating. These range from personal barriers, such as lack of time, to structural barriers, such as lack of female role models in their sport.

"If we can help increase the number and calibre of female coaches, that's a win for other young women aspiring to be involved in sport."
