Rainbow End farewells its landmark entrance

The four metre tall, 1,300 kilogram rainbow that has stood over the front gate of Auckland amusement park Rainbow's End for more than 30 years has been removed to make way for a new enlarged entrance.

With a new, nine-lane entranceway to open in a few months' time, the former entrance will soon set off on a 'tiki tour' of New Zealand's North Island, from Whangarei down to Taupo.

Explaining the tour, Rainbow's End Marketing Manager Katharine Murray stated "we want to take photos of the rainbow in lots of iconic locations and we'll be putting out a call on our website if people want it to come to their town."

Thereafter, a competition will be launched to find its final "resting place", according to Chief Executive Chris Deere.

The new  entranceway will be built out of cedar wood with a curved roof and rainbow pillars up to eight metres tall will be erected on the adjacent building.

It will meet the demand of the 400,000 plus guests who visit the amusement park each year and the extra lanes are needed to meet demand.

Murray added "our visitation has been increasing over the past five years. People who haven't been for a long time are saying, 'Hey, let's go back and have a look'."

The entranceway upgrades come on the heels of the launch of the park's newest ride, Stratosfear, and the multimillion-dollar upgrade of the Kidz Kingdom in 2012.
