Powerhouse Museum expands support of NSW Creatives with 2020 Residency Program
The Powerhouse Museum has advised that Expressions of Interest are now open for the second year of its successful Powerhouse NSW Creative Industries Residency Program.
Launched in 2019, the program provides NSW creative industry practitioners and organisations with subsidised workspaces up to 200 metre2 at the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with the Powerhouse curatorial and programming teams.
Powerhouse Museum Chief Executive, Lisa Havilah advised “the Powerhouse has an important role to play in supporting the creative industries and we are thrilled to expand our program to provide a space for the further creation of Australian work in collaboration with the Powerhouse.”
Working across creative disciplines that represent the diversity of the Powerhouse Collection, the Residents selected for the inaugural program last year have created a multitude of projects during their residencies.
The internationally-renowned Australian fashion house Romance Was Born (Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales) have drawn inspiration from the Powerhouse Collection to create their latest seasonal collection. Sound designer Julian Wessels was inspired by a glass plate negative in the Powerhouse Collection to debut a new sound work for this year’s Earfest 2020 Festival. Artist Rosie Deacon has created a large-scale installation, Koala Train which will be unveiled at the Powerhouse as part of the Summer program in December. Art and architecture duo Heidi Axelsen + Hugo Moline from MAPA have been working on a number of architectural and urban projects including a public space project with City of Sydney. Anna Tregloan, known for creating immersive, cross-disciplinary work, has launched the Impossible Project to collate creative endeavours that were not realised in 2020 due to the global pandemic.
Romance Was Born (Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales) notes “the fashion industry, like all creative industries, have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been invaluable to have this space to continue to work on our collection during this time, which was inspired by the Powerhouse.”
