Port Douglas wildlife attraction celebrates 25th birthday

Far North Queensland wildlife experience, Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas, is celebrating its 25th birthday this month with the launch of an exciting new addition to the park.

A new exhibit called ‘The Cassowary Walk’ will open within the existing Rainforest Habitat, in which Cassie, the female currently residing in the Wetlands Habitat, will be relocated to live alongside the male cassowary, Airlie.

Wildlife Habitat Manager Clare Anderson said the cassowaries are not a breeding pair, but it was still a logical move to have them living closer together.

Anderson explained “by having a specific Cassowary Walk within the park, we hope to draw even greater attention to the plight of this endangered species, and its great importance to the rainforest environment.”

The Wildlife Habitat, which was originally named ‘The Rainforest Habitat,’ opened as a bird and butterfly park in 1989 by founders John and Marilyn Morris and Michael and Jaki Turner.

In 2005, the wildlife park was purchased by Charles and Pip Woodward and it became part of their CaPTA Group.

The Cassowary Walk will be a significant addition to the longstanding Rainforest, Wetlands and Grasslands Habitats, and the new Savannah Habitat, which opened in 2012 to house smaller birds and mammals.

As part of the monthly birthday celebrations, a special local’s entry price of $25, or $35 for entry with the iconic Breakfast with the Birds or Lunch with the Lorikeets, is valid until Friday 27th June.
