Populous to design new convention centre in Bangalore
Global sports architecture practice Populous has been commissioned to design a major convention centre in Bangalore, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka which will include the first large scale tiered seating plenary hall in the sub-continent.
Populous, which is designing the London Olympic stadium, will manage the project from its Asian headquarters in Queensland and its Indian offices.
The Convention Centre, which will be built on 35 acres of land adjacent to Bangalore International airport, is part of a new multi-billion dollar airport development targeted at the regional and global business visitor market.
Project director, Populous Senior Principal Andrew James said the scale of the plenary hall makes the Convention Centre unique in India.
James explained "the plenary hall will have the capacity to hold up to 6,000 patrons making it capable of staging major events, as well as supporting surrounding businesses.
"The Karnataka State Government is taking the lead nationally in building this facility to draw top class Events from other states and help bring business to Karnataka."
Populous Associate Puneet Khunger, project architect on the Bangalore Convention Centre, said the facility will also house a number of small conference halls, food courts and an exhibition centre, adding "the design will be fast tracked and should be completed within the next six months."
Bangalore is a major information technology hub attracting business visitors from across the region. The Government hopes to leverage this position even further on the back on this upcoming 160-hectare airport development, which is expected to generate significant employment in Bangalore and provide a boost to the local economy.
