Peter Beattie named new Chairman of Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

Former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC), replacing Nigel Chamier.

Beattie, who served as Premier from 1998 to 2007, is to be joined on the GOLDOC Board by former editor-in-chief of the Gold Coast Publications Pty Ltd Bob Gordon.

Announcing the appointments, current Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said they would ensure the 2018 Commonwealth Games would maximise value for the Gold Coast and Queensland.

Premier Palaszczuk stated “as Premier, Peter Beattie secured (the) 2001 Goodwill Games and this was another major opportunity to showcase Queensland globally.

“Through his experience and energy, Peter will help my Government ensure the 2018 Games are the best ever.

“His role as a Trade Commissioner will (also) be invaluable to reach out to international corporate sponsors and ambassadors for the Games.”

Premier Palaszczuk added “the Games will showcase Queensland and its people to an audience of more than 1.5 billion people across the world.

“It’s a great opportunity for our athletes, but it’s also an important opportunity to strengthen trade, tourism and jobs.”

“The Games are already having a significant impact and more than 5700 workers have been engaged on the Games to date.

“The Games are expected to generate 30,000 jobs and inject more than $2 billion into Queensland’s economy.”

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Peter Beattie was eminently qualified to take on the role as Chair of GOLDOC.

Minister Hinchcliffe commented “we’re in the final leg of the planning race and with 687 days to go until the Games, Peter is the perfect candidate to take on the role as Chair of GOLDOC and promote Queensland to the world.

“Peter’s experience across government and business will be invaluable and ensure our State is well placed to capitalise on business and trade opportunities presented by the Commonwealth Games.

“You could not ask for a more passionate or experienced advocate for Queensland and the Games.”

The Games, to be held from 4th to 15th April 2018, will feature 6,600 athletes and officials from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories.
