Perth Zoo introduce their latest Tree Kangaroo joey

Perth Zoo have introduced their latest Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo joey, ‘Banz’, named after a town in south-eastern Papua New Guinea, a native habitat of his endangered species.

At seven months old, Banz recently started popping his head out of mum, Doba and will soon start testing his wobbly arboreal legs, exploring the branches of his boardwalk exhibit.

The joey is incredibly important as Tree Kangaroos are so endangered that zoos around the world are coordinating their breeding programs to try and prevent extinction.

Some of Perth Zoo’s previous Tree Kangaroo joeys have since moved east and as far as the UK to share their incredibly valuable Western Australian genetics.

Perth Zoo also work beyond their gates to help this species in the wild by partnering with the Tenkile Conservation Alliance to safeguard populations in Papua New Guinea. This organisation works with more than 50 village communities to protect and conserve the remaining Tree Kangaroos, turning hunters into protectors.
