Perth Stadium gets Chamber of Commerce Backing
Western Australia's major business lobby group has thrown its weight behind a new major stadium for Perth.
In its pre-state Budget submission, the State Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WACCI) says there is a "clear business case" to build the stadium, which "remains vital to the development of a vibrant city."
The proposal for a new stadium, first outlined by the previous State Government's Stadia Taskforce in 2007, would allow "rationalisation" of existing stadia, which had a limited shelf life and were idle or under-utilised for most of the year.
A new stadium has been off the radar of the present WA Government, which instead wants to "progressively rebuild" Subiaco Oval and upgrade Members Equiry Stadium.
Premier Colin Barnett and Taskforce Chairman, and respected business figure - John Langoulant have both claimed their proposals would be cheaper than the alternative.
The need for a new stadium was among several suggestions on the WACCI's infrastructure list for May's Budget, the body calling on the WA Government to commit to funding preliminary works for the Perth Waterfront redevelopment.
