Perth set to host international hockey stars
Top class hockey comes to Perth this week when some of the world's best teams will go head to head with Australia.
Teams from Argentina, Pakistan and Malaysia will compete in Perth as part of the International Super Series - Hockey 9s Perth 2013, which starts tomorrow (Thursday 17th October) and runs until 20th October.
The teams will take on the Australian men and women's hockey sides, the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos.
Western Australian Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the event would feature some of the world's top hockey heroes, including five-time World Player of the Year, Jamie Dwyer, from Australia, and seven-time World Player of the Year, Luciana Aymar, from Argentina.
Minister Harvey explained "this event brings the best of the best to Perth. Hockey fans will have the opportunity to watch world-class hockey action with the Kookaburras, currently ranked number two in the world, taking on international heavyweights Pakistan, Malaysia and Argentina.
"In the women's draw, the Hockeyroos, who have qualified for the 2014 World Cup and November's World League Finals, will compete against reigning world champions Argentina, as well as Malaysia and new to the Hockey 9s, Canada."
The event will not only add vibrancy to the State, it will also provide valuable exposure of Western Australia through broadcasts on ABC1 and iview in Australia, as well as on the ABC Australia Network throughout Asia.
Hockey 9s features nine players per team, and is a much faster version of the game with fewer rules compared to traditional hockey.
The Western Australian Government, through Eventscorp, is proud to support the International Super Series - Hockey 9s Perth 2013.
Minister Harvey added "the first International Super Series Hockey 9s tournament was played in 2011 as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) celebrations, and was declared by players and spectators alike as an outstanding success.
"It is great to see this event develop and become a part of WA's diverse events calendar."
