Perth secures trio of rowing championships between 2027 and 2030
Western Australia has secured three major Rowing Australia national events with Perth selected to host the Australian Rowing Championships, Australian Beach Sprint Championships and Annual Masters Rowing Regatta between 2027 and 2030.
Rowing Australia is keen to rotate major events around the country, showcasing the sport nationally and increasing opportunities for communities across Australia to engage with rowing at all levels.
Supported by Tourism WA, the three events are expected to bring thousands of competitors, officials and spectators to Perth, boosting local businesses, hotels and hospitality venues across the metro area.
Rowing Australia Chief Executive Sarah Cook enthused “Western Australia has long been home to a passionate and growing rowing community and we’re hugely excited to be bringing three of our marquee events to the west in the years ahead.
“In particular, hosting the 2028 Australian Beach Sprint Rowing Championships in the same year the discipline makes its Olympic debut in Los Angeles is a tremendous opportunity to inspire the next generation and showcase the future of our sport in a world-class and iconic Australian coastal setting.”
Rowing WA Chief Executive Daniel Tackenberg added “Rowing WA is excited to partner with Rowing Australia and Tourism WA to bring the ARC and AMRC back to WA, and for the first time, host the Australian Beach Sprint Rowing Championships on some of WA’s amazing beaches.
“The whole rowing community love having these national events in our backyard, from rowers to coaches to our amazing volunteers. We can’t wait to showcase what WA has to offer to the rest of the Australian rowing community.”
The series of events commences with the 2027 Australian Rowing Championships at Champion Lakes, Australia's premier and largest rowing regatta. The annual week-long event will see a mix of national competitions come together, including the Australian Open Rowing Championships, Australian Open Schools Rowing Championships and the Queen's Cup Interstate Regatta.
The 2028 Australian Beach Sprint Rowing Championships will test the skills of athletes over a four-day program and capitalise on WA’s stunning coastline and evolving expertise in the fast-growing discipline of beach sprints.
The trifecta will conclude in 2030, when the Annual Masters Rowing Regatta descends on Champion Lakes, with rowers to compete in more than three hundred races over four days and with the event promising to deliver an inclusive celebration of lifelong participation and community.
WA Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti shared "hosting these three major national events is important for our local rowing communities, and I can't wait to see the broader community come together, creating vibrancy and atmosphere through this series of events."
The 2023 Australian Rowing Championships were held in Perth at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre from March 27th to April 2nd. This event included the Australian Open Rowing Championships, Australian Schools Rowing Championships, and the King's and Queen's Cups Interstate Regatta. It was the first time in 11 years that Perth hosted the event. The championships saw record-breaking participation and attendance by spectators.
